Football Season Review

№2: Internazionale

After reaching the treble, Scudetto, Italian Cup and Champions League, with Mourinho in charge, Inter were expected to repeat themselves also with coach Benitez. The success against Roma in the Italian Super Cup seemed to be the best of premises for the months to come. The subsequent defeat against Atletico Madrid in the European Super Cup sounded like a warning, though. As a matter of fact, Inter were never very brilliant and they lost contact from the top of the table early enough. Benitez succeeded bringing the FIFA Club World Cup home and then he resigned. Thus, Leonardo took his place, during the Christmas break, and, unlike his predecessor, he could count on a wider squad, thanks to the arrivals of Pazzini, Nagatomo and Kharja. Until the end of March, Inter's ride seemed to be unstoppable. Inter succeeded making it back on the top four and came close to the top, while achieving the quarterfinals of the Champions League. A two-week-long black-out made them lose contact from Milan and eventually succumb incredibly against Schalke 04. However, at the end of the season, Inter managed winning the Italian Cup, thus confirming the previous season's success. Inter had undoubtedly the best attack of the Serie A, they scored 69 goals, while the defence, that conceded 42 goals, certainly paid for Samuel's long-lasting absence. The play was certainly more spectacular with Leonardo in charge but the Brazilian coach often proved to be unable to “read” the matches, committing real suicides in more than one occasion. Eto'o and Pazzini proved to be fundamental, such as Lucio and Cambiasso, while Milito was definitely the disappointment of the season.

Player of the Season: Samuel Eto'o
