Football Season Review

№19: Palermo

Chaos has become the norm for Palermo under the leadership of club president Maurizio Zamparini but, with two consecutive seasons of Serie A football under their belt, surely now would be the perfect time for the club to find some much needed stability? Well, almost predictably, it didn't turn out that way for the Rosanero. Davide Ballardini made a shock return to the club at the end of last season to keep them up after originally being sacked for having bust-ups with his own players. He was maintained over the summer but differences with Zamparini over the club's transfer policy led to the coach walking out after just two games of the season. Ballardini's issue was that the club sold star forward Franco Vasquez and signed a raft of young unknown players instead of experienced Serie A stalwarts who would have had the nous for their inevitable fight against relegation. Indeed, the team looked almost unrecognisable from previous years and such a massive change to the squad was always going to take a long time to gel. There was one gem purchased on the transfer market as Macedonian forward Ilija Nestorovski had a brilliant debut season in Italian football, breaking into double figures for league goals. Other than that, there weren't many bright spots for the club as managers continued to come and go through Zamparini's revolving door. The biggest news of the season was when the long-time president eventually decided to end his own tenure - handing over the reigns to young Italian-American entrepreneur and sometimes comedian Paul Baccaglini. It was almost fitting since Palermo had turned into something of a comedy club and things didn't appear to be close to changing under the new leadership as Baccaglini sacked Diego Lopez within a few weeks. He was one of a grand total of five managers for the season but, on the pitch, their issues came at home as they failed to win at Stadio Renzo Barbera until February. It remains to be seen what the post-Zamparini era brings for the club.
