Football Season Review

Champions: St Mirren

St Mirren won the Championship title with something spare. Their dominant home form paved the way to success as they finished the season 12 points clear of Livingston. After a strong finish to the 2016/17 season their form continued after the summer break. By the end of the first quarter of fixtures they were top of the table and seldom looked back. A convincing 3-0 win over Dundee United early in the season suggested the Buddies were the team to beat. St Mirren were not storming to the title and winning by huge margins, but they were quietly efficient and kept gathering points while others around them faltered. The title was all but theirs as the final quarter of games loomed. However, it took until the third last game of the season and a goalless draw with Livingston to secure the title. Lewis Morgan was the star at St Mirren and his attacking form earned him a move to Celtic although he was immediately loaned back until the end of the season. Despite finishing as top scorer, Gavin Reilly’s contribution was overshadowed by Morgan. Another probably destined for greater things is midfielder Kyle Magennis. Despite his slender frame, the teenage midfielder coped with the physicality of the Championship and was deadly at free-kick situations. Manager Jack Ross was voted Manager of the Year by Scotland’s professional players. He’s done a great job of turning St Mirren around, but he is now wanted by other clubs. Ambitious Barnsley tried to tempt him away, but Ross is staying put at St Mirren and hopes to establish them as a force in the Scottish Premier League
