Football Season Review

Champions: Montrose

Montrose enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in their history after being crowned League Two Champions under manager Stewart Petrie. The transformation of the club under Petrie has been little short of remarkable since arriving in December. He has taken the club from the bottom of the table and into League One in little over 18 months. He laid the foundations last season and stuck with most of the squad which were beaten in the play-offs by Peterhead. He made clever additions last summer, including defenders Matty Allan and Sean Dillon and they made a positive start to the season. An eleven-match unbeaten saw them overtake rivals Peterhead and establish a lead at the top of the table at Christmas. A 6-2 home thrashing at the hands of the Blue Toon was a real blow but they recovered and were beaten just twice in their last 18 league matches, both to Clyde. They were chased all the way for the title by Peterhead, and twice came from behind to beat them 3-2 in a pivotal clash at Links Park in March. They lifted the title on the final day of the season having finished just a point clear at the top of the table. Their success was built upon a strong spine of goalkeeper Allan Fleming, full-backs Andrew Steeves and Callum Ballantyne, midfielder Terry Masson and striker Chris Templeman, who finished as leading goalscorer with ten goals. Sean Dillon missed just one league game all season and was voted player of the season. The capture of midfield playmaker Lewis Milne in January was pivotal and he was a hugely creative influence whilst also notching ten goals. The Gable Endies will have plenty of cause of optimism under Petrie next season.
