Football Season Review

№11: Werder Bremen

A season that threatened to be one of struggle ended on a fairly comfortable note for Werder Bremen who overcame a poor first half of the season to finish well clear of the relegation zone. Having narrowly missed out on a European spot the previous season, Bremen looked for another successful campaign under Alexander Nouri but things did not go according to plan as they struggled to find the back of the net in the opening months of the season. Bremen had to wait until November to register their first win of the campaign after enduring an 11-match winless start, during which they were shut out seven times, and could only manage to score just five goals. By then Bremen were in the relegation zone, and Nouri was sacked. He was replaced by Florian Kohfeldt who lost just three times in his first seven games, but more importantly, picked up 10 points during the period to help move Bremen within touching distance of safety before the winter break. The improvement in form continued when the season resumed, with defeats to Bayern Munchen and Freiburg the only blots between January and April. By this time Bremen had banished any fears of a relegation battle and were sitting pretty in mid-table though they did experience a dip in form at the end, with just one win in their final six games. Max Kruse topped both the scoring and assists charts, though he could only manage six of each, but it was in the midfield that Bremen found their most consistent player as Thomas Delaney enjoyed an excellent first full season with the club, and was central to some of the best football Bremen played under Kohfeldt. Bremen were hard to beat at the back, with the club boasting the fourth best defence in the league, but it is in the final third that Kohfeldt will need to bolster his options, especially with Zlatko Junuzovic having already confirmed he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
