The Wee Gers will only just be getting over it now having breathed an enormous sign of relief over the summer. They avoided a relegation play-off with victory on the final day of the season to finish in 8th place and John Coughlin was working hard over the summer to ensure they did not endure another tough campaign this time around. However, Coughlin left the club after just four league games of the new season with Robbie Horn coming in to replace him. One of the problems Horn will be hoping to solve is in defence, having had the worst record in the division and having already conceded ten in four league games so far. The worst defensive record in League Two. First-choice goalkeeper Kevin Walker left the club and goalkeeper Robby McCrorie came in on a season-long loan from Rangers. He will challenge young goalkeeper Sean Brennan for the No.1 jersey, who established himself in the first team last season. The back-line in front of him has been added to with the capture of left-back Chris McDonald from Whitley Bay looking like quite a coup. The manager is expected to blood youngsters with defenders Callum Donaldson and Kevin Waugh coming in on development loans from Hibernian whilst defender Oliver Fleming has signed from junior side Sauchie Juniors. Another priority for the club over the summer was to keep hold of midfield playmaker Steven Thomson, who enjoyed an outstanding first season in senior football with a host of assists added to his 13 goals. He will be the one to watch again this season. Striker Aaron Murrell's loan from Dundee United was made permanent and he is set to link up with striker Greg Rutherford in what appears to be a promising attacking partnership. There is plenty of experience to supplement the youth in the likes of defender Gary Phillips, midfielder Michael McKenna and striker Darren Lavery and if the Wee Gers can find some defensive solidity they certainly have the attacking prowess to challenge at the right end of the table in 2017/18.

Target

The Wee Gers will be hoping to avoid another season of struggle and a play-off push is possible should they sort out their defensive problems.
