Mansfield Town continue to grow under the astute management of Nigel Clough. The Stags could have suffered from second-season syndrome last season but slowly and steadily improved, finishing the campaign in superb form, losing just one of their last fourteen league games to finish in 10th place. There was also an exciting F.A. Cup win at Sheffield United which was rewarded with a visit from Premier League Champions Arsenal. It illustrates the progress under Clough, who had to deal with a succession of long-term injuries in every area of the pitch except goalkeeper Liam Roberts. Centre-back Adedeji Oshilaja spent much of the season managing a groin injury, midfielder Regan Hendry failed to rediscover his early season form following knee surgery and striker Tyler Roberts missed three months with a ruptured hamstring. Keeping hold of their best players is always a challenge, especially when they’re loanees. Jamie McDonnell arrived on a season-long loan and was outstanding. He was recalled in January, leaving a big hole. Clough filled it with the loan signing of Jon Russell, who had fallen out of favour at Barnsley. His loan has now been made permanent. Clough’s shrewd use of the transfer market is further illustrated by the recruitment this summer. In addition to Russell, just three players have signed. Yet they are exactly what the team needs and bring undoubted quality. Michael Smith ought to thrive after dropping down a division following his move from Preston North End. His physicality is perfectly suited and brings something the team lacked last season. The capture of David McGoldrick is a real coup. He was outstanding for Barnsley last season, and Clough quickly moved for him following Conor Hourihane’s departure. McGoldrick is a match-winner, capable of scoring goals and providing assists, his skill-set is well above League One level. Liam Thompson completes the short list having signed from Derby County. He brings plenty of potential with hopes he could make a similar impact to McDonnell. With the spine of the squad already in place, another couple of signings of a similar standard and there will be lots of optimism around Field Mill.
