There is very little doubt that Sheffield Wednesday were the biggest underachievers of the previous League One season, as they found themselves battling against the drop at one point despite having a very strong squad and the funding of owner Milan Mandaric available. Gary Megson took over from Alan Irvine in February, and needed some time to get his squad going, but the Owls managed to end the season in promotion form. The good end of the season, most notably the home form, will give the fans hope going into the upcoming campaign, but Megson will know that he has a very difficult task ahead of him, as his side are well known for their lack of consistency. Defenders Rob Jones and Danny Batth, who both spent time on loan with the club last season, were brought in again, with the former signing permanently, while Nottingham Forest defender Julian Bennett and Swindon midfielder David Prutton have also signed. Squad players Paul Heffernan, Darren Potter and Gary Teale have left, as well as starters Tommy Miller and Neil Mellor, with the club trying to bring the latter in on a permanent deal. Despite losing three midfield players, the Owls are known for their strength in depth in this area and there is absolutely no reason why they shouldn't challenge for promotion with the squad they have. Megson will once again have the financial backing of Mandaric and will be able to bring in players if necessary, with the size of the club making Championship level players realistic targets.

Target

Ideally, they will be looking for direct promotion. The talent and the resources are there, but this side has a huge self-destructive potential, and it will be up to Megson to help his players gain some much needed consistency.
