Football Season Review

№11: Akhisarspor

Although Akhisar struggled to guarantee their survival on the late fixtures, it has been a memorable season for them as the Aegean side managed to defeat Fenerbahce in the Turkish Cup final and won the cup for the first time in their club history, which enabled them to represent the country in Europe. Considering their squad level, they did a good job on the initial games, collecting sixteen points in the early eight fixtures. As the 3rd placed team, they looked like a very dangerous opponent, but then their performance became so poor and they failed to taste any victory for twelve fixtures. This terrible performance made them turn into a survival contender. A four-game victory run enabled them to take a deep breath for a while, but they could not prevent from facing the same bad run again. Till the last two fixtures, they were one of the relegation candidates, but six points on the final period let them survive at the top level. At this point, the coach could not provide the coordination between the cup and the league. It seemed like they gave more importance to some cup duties. Speaking about the cup, they have a done great job by winning it. It was a deserved success for them considering they overcame former cup holders Kayseri, Galatasaray and Fenerabahce respectively. At this point, Mugdat Celik’s 3 goals & 5 assists were the key performance to clinch the Turkish Cup. The coach experienced the importance of a wide-range squad this season. Considering that a busy schedule awaits them, he will try to persuade the board in creating enough source in order to bring more players. If they cannot, they may not repeat this season’s success.
