Football Season Review

№2: Fenerbahce

Although Fenerbahce earned a Champions League qualifiying round spot, it could be said that it was a disappointing season for the Yellow Canaries as they failed to win the title for the 4th time in a row and even lost the cup final. No doubt that they kicked off the season very badly, recording only one victory in their opening four games. Then the fans saw a very early exit from the Europa League against the Macedonian minnows Vardar. The coach had to face a big pressure early on in September. After they overcame Besiktas at home in the city derby, everybody was hoping that the team would start to build a steady run, but it did not happen soon. Although they had to lose some points unexpectedly because of draws, they managed to remain undefeated for a long time till February. Despite this run, coach Aykut Kocaman’s future was questioned frequently. These discussions reached a peak after they suffered two defeats in a row against Besiktas and Akhisar, but their Turkish Cup run helped him out. Even if they recorded a great winning run between April and May, they could only finish the season in the 2nd place. Although the coach during the season said that, for him, any result except the title would have been a failure, a CL spot could be very important considering the financial facts. They have become the most goal scoring team of the league for the first time after winning the title for the last time four years ago. Most people believe that the coach’s job will not be safe, even if the current club president wins the upcoming elections. It is sure that the summer will be active for them. They will be very determined to end their title hunger and build a better squad for Europe.
