Football Season Review

№4: Annan Athletic

The Galabankies enjoyed a successful season under player-manager Peter Murphy albeit one which ended in disappointment after being beaten in the play-off final by Clyde. Murphy has built a young, dynamic side despite meagre resources at such a young SPFL club. Whilst naming himself as a substitute on numerous occasions, he didn’t make a single appearance as he concentrated on management and it certainly paid off. They were in tremendous form from the turn of the year with their last home defeat coming in December, and lost just two of their last 16 league games. They were far too strong for League One Stenhousemuir in the play-off semi-finals, but a 1-0 first leg wasn’t enough to take to bogey side Clyde for the second leg, losing 2-0 at the Broadwood Stadium. It was a breakthrough season for winger Chris Johnston, who was sensational on the right and created a bag full of goals for strikers Aidan Smith and Tommy Muir, who finished as joint top scorers with 14 apiece. Tony Wallace provided the perfect foil on the opposite flank and notched an impressive 13 goals. Scott Hooper missed just two league games at right back whilst David Wilson and Owen Moxon formed a formidable partnership in the middle of the park. Murphy has signed a new two-year deal and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be challenging for the title next time around.
