Football Season Review

№20: Atletico Goianiense

Atletico Goianiense sealed the Serie B title in 2016, which provided them with the chance to show their skills on the highest level, but that wasn't the case at all. Other promoted sides like Bahia and Vasco da Gama secured their spot for the 2018 campaign with relative ease, but Atletico Goianiense failed to keep up with the other struggling teams from the first match on. The ideal atmosphere just wasn't there and the lack of results put immense pressure on the club. Marcelo Cabo and Doriva had to leave during the season as they failed to record results with this outfit, but that didn't seem to change much. Joao Paulo Sanches took over in July, which finally resulted in some wins, but it was all too little too late. A streak of eight matches without a win near the end of the campaign proved fatal as expected. The Atletico Goianiense side did manage to stay unbeaten though in the last five games of the season, but that won't satisfy the fans at all. Their team finished last, seven points from safety. It will be tough now to bounce back for this outfit. Joao Paulo Sanches already worked with a small group of players and forming a team that could push for the Serie B title next season won't be an easy mission at all now. The fans will want to forget this campaign rather sooner than later as Atletico Goianiense was the worst team in the league from the start.
