Football Season Review

№18: Avai FC

Avai has been one of those typical promotion and relegation teams for years now. The outfit from Florianopolis dropped to the Serie B in 2016, but they managed to bounce back with the perfect response. Their second position in the second tier earned them a spot in the Serie A again in 2017, but this club failed to impress once again. Claudinei Oliveira's men were in the race to secure their spot on the highest level for another year until the last day, but their campaign simply wasn't enough to prevent another relegation despite an impressive run near the very end. Avai could have prevented the drop on the last day of the season as wins over Palmeiras and Atletico Paranaense put them in a decent position to push for the sixteenth spot, but the 1-1 draw against Santos proved fatal. Avai managed to collect 43 points but Coritiba and Vitoria, teams that collected 43 points as well, recorded more wins, which sealed the deal. The main reason for Avai's disappointing season was the lack of goals. This outfit only conceded 48 goals, which was actually the best statistic from teams in the bottom seven, but Avai only produced 29 goals in 38 matches themselves. The relegation wasn't a big surprise with that in mind, but this club already showed in the past that they're capable of bouncing back within a year. This will be the main mission again in 2018.
