Football Season Review

№20: Avai FC

A total failure for Catarinenses in their return to top flight. A hard season was heavily expected, but perhaps not even the most pessimistic fan would expect such a poor performance. On paper, Avaí admittedly had one of the weakest squads as the season started. Still, the start of the season was painful to watch, and Avaí could only grab their first win on the 17th round, way after Alberto Valentim replaced Geninho on the dugout. 3 victories during the month of September gave some very light hopes of a comeback for the second half of the season but, after a 1-6 defeat on the 21st round, the rest of the season was even more disastrous for Catarinenses: only 4 points collected in the last 18 matches. Together with Náutico in 2013, this was the worst performance of the decade as Avaí picked only 20 points. There was a constant change on the main lineup, as very few players were steady enough to keep a spot on the team. Perhaps the biggest names of the squad for the season, experienced midfielders Douglas and Ferrareis were a complete miss as they barely even played. On the good side, the youngster Jonathan appeared on the first team and had some interesting individual performances, unfortunately interrupted by some injury problems. Vladimir in goal and Castro in midfield were decent. 2020 will be impossible to predict, and the squad should be dismantled almost on its entirety.
