Football Season Review

№6: Sao Paulo FC

A decent regional season, some hot signings in pre-season, a few youngsters ready to be launched to stardom and a good initial 4 rounds let it seem Tricolores were heading for success, but 2019 ended up being a frustrating year. The team was unable to keep a constant pace and two bad sequences (round 5 to 10 and 16 to 21) made the board sack coach Cuca and replace him by former Fluminense Fernando Diniz. Diniz brought a bit of joy, stylistically speaking, but inconsistency kept being the dominant note on São Paulinos’ campaign. Not even the adding of big names Dani Alves and Juanfran in August made much difference. Physical problems were aplenty during the first half of the season, particularly in attacking players. Youngsters Antony, Toró, Igor Gomes, Luan and Liziero failed to make a definite mark on Brazilian football, but it was clear they are big talents to follow closely next season. The left-footed forward Antony may not even last long as he’s been linked with a move to Europe. Pato was an absolute miss, this season, rarely making any impact during a match. Hernanes and Everton C. spent more time on the medical department than on the pitch. Goalkeeper Volpi and full-back Reinaldo were exceptions and had a solid season. There are talent enough to hope for a better 2020, especially with Fernando Diniz having time to prepare the entire season from beginning.
