Football Season Review

№19: Chapecoense

After 6 years among top teams in the country, Chapecoense succumbed to failure. 2019 was marked by two constant things happening to Chape: always being second best in their games and collecting long injuries in important players. Verdão was not dramatically poor on the pitch, but they were always slightly inferior to opponents… constantly. They were rarely completely smashed, unlike their direct rivals, but were rarely able to be a match for the teams on the upper half of the table. Season started with a lot of players on the medical department. As an example, Vágner and João Ricardo were new signings for goal, but long injuries on both of them forced 3rd option Tiepo to be the main keeper for the season. With Ney Franco on the dugout, Chape started the season with a promising win over Internacional, but that ended up being one out of only 7 victories during the whole season. Ney was replaced after 11 rounds, first by interim Emerson Cris, then by Marquinhos who couldn’t avoid the tendency for Chape to keep dropping points by marginal scores. Club was highly dependent on Everaldo in attack. The striker scored almost half the goals of the team’s total. The veteran Márcio Araújo was ever present in midfield. Campanharo was never able to deliver the type of performances expected when he signed in. Elicarlos and Gum were disappointing. Squad should undergo a big reshape so it’s hard to account on what to expect for their return to Série B.
