Football Season Review

№19: Cesena

Having come up via the Serie B play-offs, Cesena were instantly tagged as favourites to go straight back down and that's exactly what proved to be the case as the club once again failed to establish themselves in the top flight. It wasn't for the lack of effort though as they showed plenty of team spirit throughout the season but, without the necessary quality in the side, a club won't survive at this level. They did have some stars in the team with striker Gregoire Defrel shining brightest and finishing as their top scorer with nine goals. Plenty of them were provided by Franco Brienza who revelled in the trequartista role. However, the Seahorses were just too leaky at the back and conceded a massive 73 goals throughout the entire campaign. Pierpaolo Bisoli started the season in charge but was replaced before the winter break by Domenico Di Carlo who has plenty of experience in relegation dogfights but even he couldn't save the team from the drop. Cesena won't want to become something of a yo-yo club as they have been back and forth to the top flight a couple of times already in recent years. They'll hope to invest well in the summer and hang onto some important players in order to have another crack at the big time.
