Football Season Review

№10: Milan

The once great AC Milan had another horrific season to forget as they continue to struggle to rekindle past glories. Clarence Seedorf was given his marching orders at the end of the season after failing to get the club into Europe which seemed a harsh dismissal given that he was only there for half the season. His replacement was another Milan legend in "Super" Pippo Inzaghi but he didn't prove to live up to that nickname from the touchline. Another player with that particular moniker was offloaded in the summer as star striker Mario Balotelli was sold for what looked a measly £16m. Jeremy Menez was brought in from Paris Saint Germain and he proved to be one of the few bright sparks in the Rossoneri's campaign with sixteen goals. However, that seems to be where the positivity ends for the club. Even without European football to contend with, they weren't ever able to challenge in the league. Inzaghi never seemed to know what his best line-up was and the club fell massively off the pace, not just in terms of the Champions League spots but in terms of European qualification altogether. Alessio Cerci arrived in January to try to liven things up but he seemed disheartened by a failed move to Atletico Madrid in the summer whilst Mattia Destro also failed to produce his best form having arrived from Roma. It was poor performance after poor performance and it's truly surprising that Inzaghi lasted until the end of the season, just managing to get AC Milan a top half finish which is pretty much sacrilegious for a club of their stature. Unsurprisingly though, he was given his marching orders. With talk of an emotional return for Carlo Ancelotti making all the headlines, it seemed a surprise when Siniša Mihajlović, a former Inter Milan player and coach, was appointed. It's a risk by the board but the Serb has worked wonders in turning around Sampdoria - can he do the same at a much bigger club though?
