Football Season Review

№18: Chesterfield

Chesterfield entered the season knowing that they were always going to struggle the heroics from the 2014-15 campaign, which saw them reach the play-offs. The Spireites lost manager Paul Cook as well as some of their best players during the summer and, despite making a decent enough start and losing only one of his opening five league games in charge, Dean Saunders was eventually proved to be unable to fill the shoes of his predecessor, as the Spireites started being dragged into the relegation battle, with Saunders being relieved of his duties following a seven-game losing run in December. The club made the decision to replace him with another experienced manager in Danny Wilson and, despite not being the first choice of a lot of their fans due to his somewhat negative playing style, Wilson did enough to steer the Spireites away from trouble and towards safety. Wilson will now have the summer available to make the squad his own - seven players have already left due to not having their contracts extended, while veteran utility man Chris Herd has already left. Chesterfield's squad still contains several veterans who are well over the hill and barely featured this season, such as Ritchie Humphreys and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, and there seems to be little doubt that further outs and ins are to be expected as Wilson will try to assemble a squad capable of pushing for at least a top half finish.
