Football Season Review

№19: Fleetwood Town

Given that they spent the entire season hovering around the relegation places, the Fishermen will definitely be pleased to have managed to secure their third consecutive season of League One football. They started the season in rather disappointing fashion, having won only two of their opening ten league games, with the board opting to part ways with Graham Alexander at the end of September. They needed only a week to appoint Steven Pressley as their new boss, and the former Coventry manager definitely managed to change their fortunes, as he produced a decent return of four wins and as many defeats in his opening eight games in charge. What was frustrating for Fleetwood fans was the fact that, throughout the course of the campaign, their side played some good football and the story of their side creating more scoring chances than their opponents only to end up drawing or losing became all to familiar. They also had to deal with a huge injury crisis in the final third of the season, but Pressley has made some shrews loan signings, with Wes Burns being the pick of the lot, and his side managed to secure their survival after easily beating Crewe in the final round of the season. What seems to be clear is that this Fleetwood side has far more potential than their finishing position suggests, and Pressley's task during the summer will be to reshape their squad a bit and make them strong candidates for a top half finish or even a play-off place. He has already brought in six new players and has made it clear that he plans to bring in more, as the stage seems to be set for a very busy summer at the Highbury.
