Football Season Review

№17: Coventry City

Coventry have had a very disappointing season which almost ended in complete disaster, but the Sky Blues escaped the worst case scenario and secured their League One survival on the last day of the season. Things started well for them, as they played some decent football early in the year, while their much-anticipated return to the Ricoh Arena back in September lifted the spirits of everyone associated with the club. They managed to win their first two games at the Ricoh, edging out both Gillingham and Yeovil, but things turned sour for them after that, as they went on a seven-game run during which they collected only a point. Their return to the Ricoh eventually turned out to have been a curse rather than a blessing, at least results-wise, as their back-to-back wins in September were followed by a run of 16 home games during which they managed to win only twice. The injury situation also played a part in their struggles, as several different players spent significant time on the treatment table, with the most notable absentee being Reda Johnson, who missed more than a half of their season with several different problems. Steven Pressley eventually paid with his job for all of his side's problems and, after two weeks of searching, the Sky Blues appointed the experienced Tony Mowbray, who managed to guide them to safety. Their ambitions for the upcoming season will be to have nothing to do with relegation and even push for a top six place, but Mowbray will know that major changes will have to be made over the summer in order for that dream to become reality.
