Football Season Review

№10: Fleetwood Town

The season that is now behind us was anticipated with great anxiety by Fleetwood Town fans, who had the chance to see their club participate in the third tier of English football for the first time in their history. The Fishermen never looked to be in danger of suffering an immediate return to League Two, as they spent the majority of the campaign hovering around the play-off places, only to ultimately miss out on a top six face. They made a reputation of being similar to what their manager Graham Alexander was like during his playing days - as they are an unspectacular but rather efficient side. They have not had any major dips in form during the entire season, but have also failed to go on an extended run of positive results, which was one of the reasons for their failure to break into the top six. However, it needs to be noted that Alexander was never really expected to deliver a play-off place and that the fact that Fleetwood were ever able to dream about a top six finish actually speaks volumes about the quality of work that Alexander has done with the squad. The Fishermen have established themselves as an excellent defensive side, having conceded less goals than any other side in the league that finished outside the top three, but their inability to find the net regularly enough has been their undoing, and Alexander's priority in the summer will most likely be to bring in a quality striker. However, Josh Morris, who has been their arguably best player this season, is back with parent club Blackburn following the expiry of his loan stay, and Alexander will likely be desperate to bring him in during the summer, either on loan or permanently.
