Football Season Review

№9: Dundee United

An excellent first season back in the top-flight for Dundee United. The team gelled well under new manager Micky Mellon and were strong defensively, while often struggling for goals. With only 1 defeat in the first 4 games, United gained confidence quickly. They were consistently well organised and showed good squad depth. Young players like Neilson, Chalmers and Kerr Smith all made promising appearances. A solid core contributed to a tough defence, with Robson and Harkes performing well provided a good base on the team. Siegrist was excellent, often keeping his team in games single-handedly. But the forward line was sometimes weak. Shankland and Clarke sometimes struggled for consistency with both strikers experiencing goal droughts at times. A lack of goalscoring ability from elsewhere saw them the lowest scoring team in the league. Midfielder Fuchs proved to be a key signing. He offered a strong presence in midfield, contributing well in defence and attack. United struggled for consistency throughout the campaign. They only put consecutive wins together on 2 occasions, although did manage a 5 game unbeaten run early on. With manager Mellon departing unexpectedly, and rivals Dundee FC reaching the top flight, next season will be another challenging campaign for United.
