Football Season Review

№7: St Mirren

A successful season for St Mirren that came within a whisker of being so much more. The campaign started well, with good wins over Livingston and Hamilton. But a COVID breach saw numerous players ruled out, including all senior goalkeepers. Despite drafting in Zlamal on loan, St Mirren were disrupted and suffered a 6-game losing run, ultimately costing them a top 6 spot. The attacking line was poor throughout the campaign. Obika and Erwin were both consistently weak and scored too few goals. High profile acquisition Quaner failed to remain fit and was unable to maintain a place in the squad Two players acquired from the Irish leagues both excelled, with McGrath and Connolly offering pace and creativity from midfield. McGrath was the standout, scoring 17 goals in all competitions. The team missed out on a top 6 spot at the last hurdle, but ultimately finished in a creditable 7th. Despite some impressive cup performances, including knocking out then unbeaten Rangers in the League Cup and reaching the Scottish Cup semi-finals, the team fell flat in finals. It was the Saint's most successful campaign in decades, but they may be disappointed not to have challenged for European football. With key players like Obika moving on in the close season, the club’s summer recruitment will be key in an attempt to reach the top 6 next season.
