Football Season Review

№18: Greuther Furth

It was a season of disappointment for Greuther Furth as they finished at the bottom of the Bundesliga table, 12 points away from safety. Furth had started the season on a positive note, collecting four points from their opening four games but following their win over Mainz on Match Day 2, they went on a disappointing run of 17 games without a win to slip to the bottom of the league table. A shock victory over Schalke rekindled hopes of survival but defeats to Wolfsburg and Fortuna Dusseldorf prompted the Furth board to sack Mike Buskens. However by the time Frank Kramer took charge of the club, Furth had managed to collect just two points from their five games and survival looked an impossible task, a fact acknowledge by the new coach who had all but given up on a miraculous comeback. A major let down for Furth was up front with the team managing to score just 26 goals, the lowest number of goals in the Bundesliga this season. Furth did manage to end the season with their heads held high, beating Nurnberg and Stuttgart but were unable to secure a victory in front of their home fans with their last match at the Trolli Arena ending in a 1-2 defeat to SC Freiburg. While Furth struggled to score goals up front, Wolfgang Hesl was the best player on the pitch for the Cloverleaves with the keeper pulling off a number of great saves throughout the season. Hesl was the first choice keeper under Buskens and though he initially lost his place to Max Grun after Kramer decided that he will be rotating the keepers, the 27-year old was restored as the No 1 keeper in the final few games of the season. Kramer will be hoping that Hesl will stay on with the club as he embarks on a rebuilding process for the next season with an aim of making an immediate return back to the Bundesliga.
