Football Season Review

№11: Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg had a season of two halves, finishing the first half of the season just above the relegation zone but managing to get close to the European places in the second half of the season. They began the season under Felix Magath who won the title with them in 2008/2009 but he failed to recapture the magic and was sacked before the winter break with Under-23 coach Lorenz-Gunther Kostner taking over for a short while. In the early part of the season with such upheaval at the club they struggled despite bringing a number of players in during the summer who struggled to settle into the team. During the winter break the management team at Wolfsburg was completely changed with Klaus Allofs coming in as sport director from Werder Bremen and importantly Dieter Hecking appointed as coach from fellow Bundesliga side Nurnberg. This new team helped to galvanise the team and the second half of the season saw them rise up the table but there will still be disappointment due to the lack of home wins they managed, second least behind relegated Furth. They can certainly improve this aspect next season and if they are to finish in the top six they will need to as well. By the end of the season Wolfsburg managed to remove some of the weaker players in the team and their attack was functioning much better. They must keep the services of influential playmaker Diego who was their best player this season as he is now a wanted man by a few other clubs in Europe. Stability will be key to success next season, if they can keep the team intact and do not make any rash decisions about their manager they have all the ingredients for a successful team.
