Football Season Review

№10: Hellas Verona

Hellas Verona made a long awaited return to Serie A after being missing from the top flight for over a decade. And what a return it was! Andrea Mandorlini, who'd guided the club to two successful promotions in recent years, managed to surprise everyone with what he was able to get out of this team. It all started on the opening day of the season as Verona were able to come from behind to stun giants AC Milan with a 2-1 victory. Both goals on that day from Luca Toni and it set the tone for an Indian summer for the veteran striker who enjoyed his most prolific season in some time. He ended the campaign with 20 league goals - only Ciro Immobile scored more - and there were even whispers of a potential World Cup call-up for the 37 year old. That never came but he can be proud of an excellent season nonetheless. Juan Iturbe was another new recruit who gave Toni a run for his money as Hellas's player of the season. The exciting Argentine youngster produced some vibrant and devastating displays from the wings. The club finished the season in the top half but it shows just how far they've come since their promotion that it was considered something of a disappointment in the end. Their blistering start to the campaign petered out towards the end and they eventually narrowly missed out on what would have been a historic achievement of European qualification. They'll hope to keep hold of some of their more important players in the summer and consolidate next season.
