Football Season Review

№7: Torino

There's a fine line between agony and ecstasy and that line for Torino was almost Alessio Cerci's injury-time penalty against Fiorentina on the final day of the season. The Granata were just one kick of the football away from ensuring a place in Europe for the first time in two decades. It would have been a fitting end to a terrific season for Giampiero Ventura's men but fate conspired against them and Cerci missed his spot-kick. However, luck would eventually turn in their favour again as Parma were not granted entry into the Europa League meaning Toro will get in through the backdoor. Some may label this a hollow victory of sorts but that is extremely harsh on a Torino side who produced one of the best campaigns in the club's history. Having just about survived last season, no one could have predicted the rise of the Granata and fewer would have foreseen the entertaining style in which they would achieve it. Cerci was their star player last season and he continued to produce some scintillating performances wherever he played along the frontline. However, this campaign belonged to his partner in crime, Ciro Immobile. There were question marks about the youngster's ability to be prolific in the top flight of Italian football but he answered that by ending the season as the Capocannoniere with 22 goals in Serie A. Unfortunately for the club, he has since left to join Borussia Dortmund. It will be difficult for Ventura to cope with that loss and to lift his squad to produce another season like this next year but that shouldn't take away from what they achieved in 2013/14.

Player of the Season: Ciro Immobile
