Football Season Review

№20: Huddersfield Town

After defying the odds to survive in their first top flight season in 45 years, Huddersfield knew that their second campaign in the Premier League would be much harder. Just like a year earlier the Terriers were the lowest scoring side in the league, and with clean sheets and wins much harder to come by this campaign, the situation quickly got out of hand. Huddersfield had to wait until November for their first win and also for their first goal scored on home turf. The fate of the team was sealed between December and February when the Terriers broke several negative records and earned a single point from 14 league matches. Coach Wagner was sacked in mid-January after the 0:0 away draw vs. Cardiff, but the appointment of Jan Siewert as a replacement didn’t change the fortunes. The new manager lost 12 of his first 13 league games in charge, another negative record, and to top it all, Huddersfield became the side relegated earliest in Premier League history. Of all the disappointing performers in the squad the one that probably made fewest mistakes was Kongolo. Able to play both as part of a back 3 or back 4, plus as left wing-back, he started most matches and did relatively well considering the circumstances. From what was seen this season it is very unlikely that Huddersfield will be challenging for promotion any time soon, just the fans hope that the wait won’t be another 45 years!

Player of the Season: Terence Kongolo
