Football Season Review

№2: Liverpool

Liverpool improved a lot in terms of Premier League results, but despite having a club-record points tally and just 1 league defeat at the end of the season, earning a single point from the 2 matches vs. Man City proved decisive. The Reds narrowly missed out on the title, with the wait for a domestic title now 30 years and counting! Focusing on the league was easy with Liverpool knocked out of both cup competitions on the first hurdles, with the team’s improvement in defence the main reason for the many more wins that were achieved. Alisson was the best goalkeeper in the league, the full-backs were excellent with all the assists they provided, but the undoubtable rock at the back was giant Van Dijk. Going forward Firmino and Salah had quieter seasons compared to the previous campaign, but Mane stepped up and from the ‘Fab Three’ he was probably the best during the campaign. The only league defeat was the 1:2 loss vs. Man City in round 21, which was soon followed by 3 consecutive away draws and this poor run in January and February proved decisive for Liverpool missing on the title. At least the season was not a complete failure with Liverpool winning their sixth Champions League title after beating Tottenham in the final. It is hard to see what more Klopp can improve in the squad or in the results next season. In fact many pundits think that it would be extremely hard for Liverpool to repeat the form and results they showed throughout this campaign.

Player of the Season: Virgil van Dijk
