Football Season Review

№6: Queen of the South

The Doonhamers faded towards the end of the season and finished in 6th place. Apart from the early stages of the season they were never in relegation trouble and could be viewed along with Raith Rovers as the surprise packages of the season. Queens were fortunate to avoid relegation the previous season and only threw a squad of relative unknowns together just before the new one began. They were firm relegation candidates and 7 defeats in their opening 9 matches only confirmed their status. However, in the middle part of the season they suddenly found form and won 7 of 10 matches (W7 D2 L1) and relegation thoughts were forgotten. During this spell they defeated Raith Rovers, Dundee and soon after the champions, Hearts. The form did not last, and they finished the season with only 1 win in 8 matches (W1 D2 L5) as the goals dried. Overall, a mid-table table finish was still a success. Obileye was drafted in as a centre back, but he found his niche and scoring touch in midfield. Shields came into the team when Dobbie was injured and excelled. Veteran right-back Gibson also excelled upon his return to the Doonhamers. Unfortunately for Queens, Obileye’s success has produced a transfer to Livingston. With veteran striker Dobbie retired and only Gibson under contract, it looks like being another season of uncertainty for Queen of the South.

Player of the Season: Ayo Obileye
