Football Season Review

№9: Rochdale

Rochdale are coming from a season in which they performed almost exactly the same as they did a year earlier, as they finished the current season in ninth, four points below the play-off places, while they finished the 2015/16 season in tenth, five points below the play-off places. Despite the disappointment of missing out on the play-offs once more, the Rochdale fans know that they should appreciate when they have, as they are a small club that has pretty much been punching above its weight for years under the management of Keith Hill. There were fears early on in the season that the Dale could end up battling the drop, as they recorded three draws and four defeats in their opening seven matches, but things eventually got back to normal, as they went on a bit of a run and spent the majority of the season battling for a play-off place, with their slow start and a ten-match winless run that they had between mid January and March eventually costing them a finish inside the top six. Hill is well-known for the dynamic attacking football that his side play and, despite finishing ninth, the Dale were the division's third-highest scorers, with only champions Sheffield United and third-placed Scunthorpe scoring more goals than they did. All things considered, they may have missed out on a play-off place, but have had a rather decent season and the fans have reasons to be pleased, as the Dale remain a respectable League One club and have produced numerous entertaining games over the course of the campaign.
