Football Season Review

№24: Chesterfield

Chesterfield's season looked promising for around two weeks, as the Spireites went on to win three and draw one of their opening four competitive games, with controversial Ched Evans playing well and scoring in his season of return to football. Their fans could have been forgotten for dreaming that Evans would help them reach the heights from two years ago, when they were in the play-offs, but reality soon struck, as the Spireites went on a lengthy losing run, with the fact that their club chairman resigned during it arguably extending Danny Wilson's stay at their helm. The experienced manager lasted until early January, with former Wigan boss Gary Caldwell was eventually named his replacement, but the appointment of the young manager never did anything to really improve the Spireites' fortunes, as they kept being further and further away from the relegation zone and eventually went down without ever putting up a fight. The relegation marked the end of a difficult year for Caldwell, who also lost his job at Wigan back in October. However, he is generally not viewed as being the main reason for the Spireites' relegation and looks likely to be given the summer to rebuild and try to mastermind a return to the third tier.
