Football Season Review

№12: St. Polten

St. Polten got relegated after finishing the season with awful 16-game winless run (D4 L12), with even managerial change that took place right before the play-offs unable to save the Wolves. The start to the campaign was actually very promising (W4 D2 L4) and come Christmas St. Polten were even thinking about the top 6. The positive early results were directly linked to the many goals scored by the 2 main forwards Hugi and Schmidt. The short winter break seemingly took out all the magic from the displays though and 6-game winless start to 2021 (D2 L4) immediately put pressure on the squad. Hugi and Schmidt stopped scoring past Christmas and this was the main reason why St. Polten’s results fell off a cliff. The last win of any kind was achieved in round 18 in late February with dreadful 16-game winless run following that. Despite the awful form St. Polten still entered the play-offs with 2 teams sitting below them, but the bad form in 2021 saw coach Ibertsberger sacked at the end of the regular season, with Gerald Baumgartner taking his place. This didn’t improve the displays much and winless play-off run (D3 L7) meant that St. Polten finished last. They still had every chance to save themselves in the decisive play-off vs. Austria Klagenfurt but 0:4 away defeat in the first leg meant that not much belief was left for the return game that was also lost – 0:1 – and this led to relegation! Now max exodus of players certain with St. Polten likely to turn towards youngsters next term in the lower division.
