Football Season Review

№12: Tranmere Rovers

Tranmere's season could be split in three easily distinctive parts: they were decent in the opening 15 rounds, abysmal between the 16th and 35th round, and absolutely brilliant in the final 11 rounds of the season. The Rovers started the season under the stewardship of Les Parry, who made it clear that his ambition was for the side to reach the Play-Offs. The Rovers looked like a side that could challenge for the top six until the aforementioned 15th round, but their season started to fall completely off the rails after that: they won only one of their next 19 games, and it was frankly surprising that the board opted to stick with Parry for as long as they did. Ronnie Moore took over a side in turmoil, that was sitting just above the relegation zone, but the impact he had can only be described as miraculous: his first game in charge saw his Rovers scoring a last gasp equalizer to claim a point against in form Notts County, and they then went on to collect 13 points from five games, a run of results that effectively secured their survival. The attacking football seen since Moore took over will fill the fans with hope going into next season, and the club's board must be regretting not making the decision to make the managerial change sooner. Our choice for the player of the season is Adam McGurk. He barely featured under Moore due to an injury, but was the main reason that Rovers managed to stay above the drop zone before Moore took over.
