Many expected Brentford to struggle after Thomas Frank's departure to Spurs and the sales of Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, but Keith Andrews steadied the ship and led them to ninth place – only missing out on European qualification on goal difference. The off-season has seen them keep their backbone intact, with an ageing Jordan Henderson the only notable departure. Meanwhile, they have broken their transfer record to bring in talented midfielder Mamadou Sangaré and added depth to their attack with the signings of Jaidon Anthony and Callum Wilson. Andrews’ rise from set-piece specialist to head coach has been rewarded with a contract extension through to 2032. With only a few players taking extended breaks after the World Cup, Andrews has been able to work with the majority of his squad during pre-season – an advantage that could prove valuable in the opening stages of the campaign. Meanwhile, last season only Erling Haaland scored more goals than a spectacular Igor Thiago (22), who proved to be a nightmare for opposition defenders, combining his imposing physical presence with ruthless finishing in the box. With the experienced Wilson added as a backup option, Brentford's attack looks well equipped heading into the new season. Yet, Brentford’s biggest concern over the last few years has been at left-back, with both Rico Henry and Aaron Hickey struggling due to injuries. Winger Keane Lewis-Potter has deputised admirably, but Brentford will need greater contributions from both full-backs.

Target

Having bolstered their squad, Brentford can realistically target a historic European place, as long as they keep their most important players fit and at the club.
