Football Season Guide

After failing to meet their high expectations with only a mid-table finish last season, the Pars will be looking to push on and at least make the play-offs this term. Like Falkirk, Dunfermline have a stadium and a support worthy of Premiership football. With administration and oblivion still fresh in the memory, it's highly unlikely the Pars will stretch themselves financially to reach the Premiership. However, they are expected to have more of an impact at the top this season. If Nicky Clark hadn't been a regular scorer last season then the Pars could have been in relegation trouble. Dean Shiels has been brought in to address the scoring problem along with Declan McManus who brings a lot of Championship experience after loan spells at Morton and Raith Rovers. Surprisingly heading out is club captain, Andy Geggan, as is Paul McMullan and a number of fringe players. The Pars had a big squad last season so losing a few fringe players will do them and their budget no harm. The Pars didn't lose many games last season but they also drew far too many because they didn't score enough goals much to the frustration of manager, Allan Johnston. With no clear favourites for the title, Dunfermline will be hoping to make a challenge at the top of the table. Pre-season friendlies caused concern as they shipped a lot of goals but that was reversed in the Betfred Cup as they qualified for the knock-out stages with ease while running up big scores. The Championship appears to be wide open this season and although the Pars may not have the quality to win it, they are certainly one of a number of teams who could be up there and challenging for most of the season. If Nicky Clark keeps his scoring form going and Dunfermline make a strong start then they have a chance. At the very least they should be looking for an improvement on last season's 5th place finish.
