Morton probably surprised themselves last season by making the play-offs with ease. This was all the more unexpected as they played most of the season without a genuine centre-forward and relied on a host of goals from set pieces. However, by the end of the campaign, they were out on their feet as they failed to record a win in their final nine games of the regular season. This dire form continued into the play-offs as they failed to do themselves justice. The question is - can they reach the play-offs again? Morton relied on a number of loan signings to bolster their team and will be looking to do the same again. These signings could make or break their season. They have signed influential midfielder, Gary Harkins, from Ayr and they will look to build the team around him. However, despite his talent, there are always doubts over his ability to get around the pitch. They will also be hoping that new striker, Bob McHugh, will become a regular starter after several seasons on and off the bench while out on loan. Jose Quitongo's return from a serious knee injury also provides grounds for optimism as an attacking threat. Did Morton get lucky last season? After only one win in their opening seven games it didn't look good for them. However, after that spell, they only lost 3 of their next 20 fixtures as their dominant defence took charge with Tom O'Ware leading by example at both ends of the pitch. O'Ware will be looking for another strong season but will miss the early part of it through injury. Jim Duffy is a highly experienced but naturally cautious manager. While taking pride in reaching the play-offs, he will have doubts in his head over the way his team collapsed in the final quarter of the season. The Championship is more evenly balanced this term with no clear favourites. Morton may not have enough in them to reach the play-offs again.
