Exeter City are one of only two clubs in League One (together with promoted AFC Wimbledon) to be fan owned, and continuing to compete at this level is a real achievement. As with any ownership model there are pros and cons but the Grecians are making it work. They have finished 14th, 13th and then 16th in the three seasons since being promoted from League Two in 2022. Several talented players have come through the academy and into the first team, most famously Aston Villa and England striker Ollie Watkins. Midfielder Jake Richards is the latest talent to make it into the first team however his departure this summer came as something of a surprise. He rejected a lucrative contract due to a lack of playing time and opted for a move to divisional rivals Luton Town instead. This has led to criticism of manager Gary Caldwell for an apparent reluctance to blood the youngsters and rely on outside recruitment. Both strategies are necessary for the club like Exeter City, and this is illustrated by the signing of striker Millenic Alli. He was at the club for just a year, making just 22 league starts, but was sold to Luton Town for a fee significantly greater than they paid. Caldwell is also a polarizing figure amongst the fan base for his style of play. Many feel there is a lack of excitement and attacking intent and that debate will continue to rage into the new season. The issue looks to have been addressed with the signing of exciting midfield playmaker Ethan Brierley on a season-long loan from Brentford. He certainly is one to watch. The Grecians will be relying on aging striker Josh Magennis to lead the attack again and the addition of another striker would help them find the goals they’ll need to keep their heads above water.

Target

Survival - they have stability, a decent squad and a manager who knows the division. They ought to be able to avoid a relegation battle.
