The Premier League dream turned into a nightmare for Luton Town, who suffer the ignominy of back-to-back relegations. In April 2024 the Hatters faced Manchester City at the City of Manchester Stadium. In August 2025 they will travel to the Pirelli Stadium to take on Burton Albion. It illustrates the brutal nature of the English pyramid and how far you can fall if you fail to win matches. It was a painful lesson for head coach Rob Edwards, who was lauded for taking the club to the Promised Land, yet left the club by mutual consent in January having failed to halt the downward spiral. Matt Bloomfield took on the poisoned chalice, bizarrely sacrificing a promotion push with Wycombe Wanderers, yet was unable to save the Hatters from relegation. So is it all doom and gloom for Luton Town? Absolutely not. A move to a new stadium is finally happening, albeit with a moving date set for 2028. The parachute payments following relegation from the Premier League will give the club a real competitive market in League One, as will the sale of significant assists in players. Those sales have already begun, mostly notably midfield playmaker Thelo Aasgaard, who made just 17 appearances before being sold to Rangers for £3.5m. Those following him out of the door include goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski, centre-back Reece Burke and striker Carlton Morris. Several more are expected to follow. Like Aasgaard striker Millenic Alli arrived at Kenilworth Road shortly after Bloomfield’s appointment in January and put in some equally impressive performances. Keeping hold of him will be key to their fortunes this season. Midfielder George Saville and striker Nahki Wells arrive with plenty of Championship experience whilst goalkeeper Josh Keeley and centre-back Hakeem Odoffin were standout performers in League One last season. The Hatters are likely to be busy in the transfer window right up until the last seconds when it slams shut.

Target

Automatic promotion - Bloomfield is a young manager with a lot to prove. He will be expected to deliver promotion this season.
