Football Season Guide

After reaching their best result in almost 35 years, finishing 4th in the previous season, last spring Utrecht had to content themselves with the umpteenth 6th place, 5 points away from the top 4 and a qualification to the next European competitions. They had actually started their campaign with an impressive 4-0 win over Heracles Almelo but their initial months were mostly characterized by inconsistency, with fatigue, caused by their European games, taking its toll. Things started improving by early February, as they were able to fully concentrate on the league again. While they were not particularly bright offensively, they scored 55 goals, Utrecht mainly relied on a solid defence: they conceded 42 goals, just 2 more than outstanding Twente. Utrecht eventually qualified to the playoffs for a place in the Conference League but, after eliminating Heerenveen, they lost the final game to Ajax following a penalty shootout. Jans, in charge of the team since 2023, eventually decided to retire from football and resigned and so the management had to look for a new coach and hired Anthony Correia, who did wonders at Telstar in the last two campaigns. The new coach will have to deal with a completely renewed defense, though. First of all, Utrecht had to part ways with key left-back El Karouani, who will be replaced by Zagré, who offered great performances at Excelsior, or versatile Paredes, also acting as a winger. Moreover, starting centre-backs van Der Horn and Viergever also decided to quit for pastures new. Offerhaus joined from Telstar and is going to play a relevant role but one more centre-back is needed with youngster Schuldes heading towards to the bench. The midfield lost a major player in Zechiel, returned to his parent club, while Van Overeem, joining from Heerenveen, could become a protagonist in the new campaign. The attack was the area where Utrecht changed the least with back-up winger Karlsson and back-up striker Haller gone, while Alarcon will be a new protagonist after signing permanently.
