Thanks to a comeback win against Lazio, who were above them in the table, Inter miraculously achieved the qualification to the Champions League in the final minutes of the past season. For such reason, coach Luciano Spalletti was confirmed at the helm of the team for the second year in a row and he was also given the opportunity to strengthen his squad. After all, during the summer transfer campaign, Inter lost only two regulars: Joao Cancelo, who had displayed some wonders once he began acting at full-back, rather than winger, returned to his parent club, Valencia, and eventually joined Juventus while Rafinha, who had become decisive in the midfield, travelled back to Barcelona. The likes of Davide Santon, Lisandro Lopez and Eder were all let go, having had scarce opportunities for showing their skills during the last campaign. First of all, Inter signed a couple of precious free agents like Stefan De Vrij, who will become a protagonist in the heart of the defence after some bright seasons at Lazio, and Kwadwo Asamoah, who is a jolly for both the defence and the midfield. Then, they found a valid alternative to Mauro Icardi for the attack in the young and promising Lautaro Martinez, from Racing Club. For the attack, they also acquired a winger as Matteo Politano, who has proven to be also a capable scorer, when at Sassuolo. However, they can certainly rejoice for Radja Nainggolan's arrival from Roma. Always highly appreciated by Spalletti, the Belgian midfielder is set to become a leader for Inter in the midfield, while providing some heavy goals. And Sime Vrsaljko, on loan from Atletico Madrid, should turn into a protagonist at right-back. The young Alessandro Bastoni, arriving from Atalanta, could represent a valid alternative for the heart of the defence while Joao Mario could also be given some substantial playing time, now that he is back from a loan to West Ham United. Inter are still looking for a midfielder and the news is that they are trying to sign Luka Modric from Real Madrid.

Target

Inter should still be fighting for the top 4 and a place in the Champions League. If they succeed hiring Modric, they would definitely become Scudetto contenders.
