Football Season Guide

An undefeated run of 11 games at the end of last season saw Inverness just miss out on the play-offs. This was quite an achievement for the Highland club as a disastrous start had them flirting with relegation. Relegation to the Championship hit finances hard and it continues to curtail their efforts to return to the Scottish Premiership. There’s been little transfer activity, but Inverness have lost some real quality from their midfield. It looks like being another tough season for Inverness with the hopes of a return to the Premiership out of sight. The Inverness midfield has been substantially weakened by the departures of Iain Vigurs and Jake Mulraney. Vigurs was the driving force behind much of their good play last season and provided goals from midfield. Adding spice to his departure is the fact it’s to derby-rivals, Ross County. Irish U-21 international, Mulraney, provided pace and guile on the right which earned him a move to Hearts. While mired in the Championship Inverness continually find it hard to recruit quality players up to the Highlands. With finances tight recruitment activity has been minmal so far. They have drafted in several players with Championship experience, but none of them are of standout quality that will make Inverness the team to catch. Tom Walsh along with Shaun Rooney and Jordan White are well known in the Scottish scene, but they are not top quality. Jamie McCart has also signed form Celtic’s U-21s, but he has limited Championship experience from his loan spells. Loan signings are expected to bolster their squad, but overall Inverness do not seem as strong as last season. Inverness may struggle to find the form the showed towards the end of last season. They could still prove difficult to beat, but it’s in midfield and attack where their lack of quality could hurt them. Derby rivalry with Ross County should spur them on, but reaching the play-offs could prove difficult again. Manager, John Robertson, showed he can work with limited resources, but Inverness could be set for a struggle this season. Another season of consolidation without a relegation scare would be welcomed by Inverness.
