Minnesota managed to sneak into the playoffs on the last day after finishing sixth in the Western Conference. Struggling in defence after Bakaye Dibassy’s serious injury in August, they had a negative goal differential (48-51) and failed to overcome FC Dallas, who beat them on penalties in the first round. Minnesota offloaded several squad players such as Adrien Hunou, Niko Hansen, Abu Danladi, Nabi Kibunguchy and Jacori Hayes. However, they did beef up their defence, signing three centre-backs in talented Mikael Marqués, experienced Toronto FC defender Doneil Henry and versatile Miguel Tapias, who is expected to start alongside Michael Boxall at the back. Adrian Heath managed to keep the team’s backbone intact, strengthening the squad with depth pieces. Yet, his main issue is that key midfielder Emanuel Reynoso has been suspended without pay by the MLS for failing to show up to training camp, having missed a month of preseason. It is doubtful whether Reynoso will available for Minnesota’s season opener, as there is currently no timetable for his return from Argentina, where he is currently dealing with personal matters. That being said, Minnesota’s biggest strength lies in midfield, where Kervin Arriaga is expected to pair up with Wil Trapp. A versatile Robin Lod could feature there too, but he could also cover for Reynoso in the playmaker position. Should their defenders stay healthy, Minnesota are not expected to struggle at the back, but they need to deal with their finishing issues if they are to compete for a playoff spot.

Target

In fact, their primary target is to make the playoffs again and better last year’s run to the first round. To do so, they need Reynoso’s situation to get resolved and hope that Dibassy will bounce back from injury.
