Even though they only obtained 2 6th place finishes in the Serie A, with Jose Mourinho at the helm of the team, Roma have become protagonists again of European football. In fact, they won the first edition of the Conference League in 2021/2022, their first European success in 60 years, and then they lost the Europa League final to Sevilla, last season. In the domestic competition, they were often too tired and inconsistent and so, on the right day, they were capable of losing to any opponents. In particular, they were too ineffective offensively, as they scored only 50 goals. So far, Roma transfer campaign was an odd one as they are still to invest any of the money obtained from selling youngsters, like Missori and Volpato to Sassuolo or Tahirovic to Ajax, and unwanted players returning from loans away, like Kluivert, Villar and Perez. In fact, they first opted to sign 3 free agents like centre-back Ndicka, who should become a protagonist at the back, while Kumbulla is out injured and Ibanez is set to leave, right-back Kristensen, who could be given a starting status instead of disappointing Celik and Karsdorp, and, last but not least, Aouar, who should provide an alternative for the midfield, an area where they were plagued by injuries last season and which also saw Wijnaldum’s departure after leaving no mark. Roma are still on the hunt for a central midfielder, as Matic is wanting to leave, and for a striker, considering that Abraham and Belotti provided only 13 goals in more than 50 games together in the past campaign. Moreover, they could also do with an attacking midfielder, since Dybala is too often injured.

Target

Aim at a place in the top 4 but another top 6 finish seems more likely.
