Football Season Guide

The 2016/17 season was a tough one to stomach for Rotherham fans who saw their side look hopelessly out of their depth throughout their Championship campaign and finish the season with only 23 points, nearly 30 points below safety. Kenny Jackett resigned midway through the season and, despite failing to improve their fortunes, his replacement Paul Warne was given a rolling one-year contract at the end of the season. Now, Rotherham's situation going into the upcoming season looks eerily similar to Yeovil's from four years ago, when the Glovers badly struggled in the Championship, with the following season ending in them being relegated to League Two. There have been several other sides who have dropped down divisions over the recent years and Warne's main task going into the upcoming campaign will be to steady the ship and restore the players' confidence which cannot be too high given that the Millers won only five of their 46 league games last season. Having said that, the squad Warne will be dealing with this time around is much different to last season's one, with Rotherham being among the sides who changed the most. Lee Camp, Stephen Kelly and Kelvin Wilson are among the important players who left but the Millers have worked hard to make sure that they will enter the season with a strong squad. Their list of summer signings include players who are proven League One class such as Darren Potter, David Ball and Jamie Proctor. Their squad as a whole certainly looks good enough to do well at this level but Warne needs to both restore the confidence of the players and prove himself as a manager. He has been at the club for years in several roles but is now solely in charge for the first time in his career.
