Football Season Guide

The last season of the Frisians was very troubled, characterized by changes on the bench and by important transfers in January such as those of the duo Veerman & Veerman that have upset the tactical plans of the coaches. They had started the season well, then had a collapse (8 consecutive losses) and partially recovered in the end snatching the 8th place, thus qualifying for the playoffs where they were immediately eliminated by AZ Alkmaar. In KNVB Beker Heerenveen reached the last 16 stage where they lost to Go Ahead Eagles. Over the summer, the club decided not to make major changes keeping the roster more or less unchanged. They let go of players who were no longer in the coach's project such as goalkeeper Erwin Mulder, defenders Ibrahim Dresevic and Nick Bakker as well as aged midfielder Siem de Jong. On the other hand, the most relevant arrival is that of former Willem II striker Mats Kohlert, flanked by two young hopefuls such as winger Alex Timossi Andersson, coming from Bayern II, and right-back Hussein Ali. The main news concerns the coach as the former Go Ahead Eagles Kees van Wonderen will sit on the Frisians bench. It is difficult to understand which system of play will be adopted by Van Wonderen, who in his career has often used the 4-2-1-3, but during the pre-season lined up the team with a more defensive 3-5-2 . At the moment the team seems complete in defense, while something is still missing in midfield and especially in attack, in particular they would need a center-forward.
