Football Season Guide

Last season was crazy for the Carinthians. They looked at one point like they'd get relegated after Kuhbauer had left. Still, three managers later, they managed to find an approach that not only saw them avoid relegation, but also come desperately close to unexpectedly making it into Europe via the back door. Change was needed, and that's precisely what happened. They've completely ripped out the spine of this team, whether by choice or not. Midfield engine Schopf, star playmaker Zukic, and defensive leader Baumgartner all left, the latter of which under a cloud. On top of their loanees (Ngankam was particularly good), they lost a lot of depth, and players that have been familiar with playing for them in the Bundesliga for a few years now. It's likely that a lack of cohesion will hurt them at the start of the season. However, the business they've done for incoming personnel has actually been very convincing. Behounek will be the new Baumgartner, Schriebl will be the new Schopf, and Mamageishvili will be the new Zukic. Kitz will be a good understudy for the CBs too - he's got a lot of ability. They may have struggled last season, but it wasn't because of a lack of talent. They still have Pink, Avdijaj, Sulzner, Matic, Wimmer etc. to call upon. Therefore, when you see them adding Hassler and Vrioni to help Pink up front, as well as Vukojevic and Schwarz to add a bit more flair in wide areas, it's hard not to be encouraged. It's not clear which (if any) returning loanees will be counted on. Ballo has already left, which was inevitable, but Dosso could be one of those that may get a shot in the first-team. There are no obvious weaknesses in this squad other than a potential lack of cohesion. With no European football to distract them, they should be able to do some damage in the Bundesliga. They've looked really dangerous in friendlies too, scoring boatloads of goals despite their many changes. If they keep this up, they should be in a position to make it into Europe next season.
