In Brief

Played 3 games in preparation for the World Cup: held to draws by Tunisia and Belgium, they beat Algeria 3-0. Will hope to take a positive result from the top match against Spain. Should count on a full panel.

Looking Back

After two rather disappointing draws against Tunisia and Belgium, at last Portugal offered a positive performance against Algeria as they obtained a 3-0 win. They scored all their goals in the first hour. For this match, coach Fernando Santos lined up most of his regulars.

Guedes offered a great performance, scoring a brace. Bruno Fernandes also scored this time out.

Looking Ahead

Portugal are expected by a tough World Cup debut as they will be facing title-chasing Spain. A positive result would be fundamental for their qualification to the next stage ambitions.

Adrien Silva, who had failed to make the squad against Belgium due to a physical issue, seems to have fully recovered.

For this match, coach Ferdinando Santos should opt for a cautious 4-4-2 formation with Fonte preferred to Alves in the heart of the defence. Guedes should be acting as Ronaldo's partner in the attack.

Points of Interest

Portugal and Spain have already met 35 times: on the whole, they won only 6 games, while drawing 12 and losing 17. The two sides last met in the Euro 2012 semifinals and Portugal lost through the penalty shootout.

Spain

In Brief

Spain do not have any players out with suspension for their opening match. They have one injury concern, with Dani Carvajal doubtful. Coach Julen Lopetegui was sacked two days before this match, with sporting director Fernando Hierro taking over.

Looking Back

Spain come into the World Cup without having a lost a single match since Euro 2016.

They have warmed up for the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in Spain and with a 1-0 victory over Tunisia in Russia.

Looking Ahead

There are no Spain players suspended for this opening match against Portugal.

Even though he is back in training, starting right-back Dani Carvajal is still a doubt after he suffered a thigh injury when representing Real Madrid in the Champions League final. Alvaro Odriozola is the backup right-back and performed well when replacing Carvajal in the two recent friendlies, even scoring the goal against Switzerland.

Gerard Pique was a doubt as well after he had to leave Monday training early with a slight knee issue, but he returned the next day and is expected to be fine to play.

Spain's preparations have been severely hampered by the sacking of coach Julen Lopetegui on Wednesday, after he accepted the Real Madrid job. He has been replaced by sporting director Fernando Hierro.

Points of Interest

There is still a major doubt over who will start for Spain up front. Iago Aspas and Diego Costa are two very different kinds of strikers and it remains to be seen who'll be given the start against Portugal.
