In Brief

Fred, Costa, Fagner and Augusto are all likely to be fit. Alves is sidelined.

Looking Back

Played a couple of solid friendly games against Croatia and Austria and claimed comfortable 2:0 and 3:0 wins. The Samba Boys played some superb football in the second half against the Austrians in Vienna and look in pretty good form and mood ahead of the start of the World Cup. They arrive on the back of a superb run of 17 wins in 21 games under Tite, keeping clean sheets in 16 games.

Looking Ahead

Will be wary of the threat posed by a solid Swiss side when taking on them on Sunday in their opening group game. The Brazilians will be facing a deep defensive block but know that Switzerland have some dangerous attacking players that can catch them off guard at times.

Tite seems rather settled on the starting 11 for the opening game and the one real question mark is whether he will start with Philipe Coutinho in midfield ahead of Fernandinho This scenario has not been used that much but the team looked excellent with Coutinho in midfield in the second half against Austria and it looks like Tite will keep it the same.

The build-up to the opening game in the World Cup has been dominated by injuries to a number of squad members. Douglas Costa, Fagner, Fred and Renato Augusto have all been troubled by various knocks in the last ten days or so but they are all progressing well and should be available for the game on Sunday. Dani Alves is definitely sidelined but there are no other major absentees.

In Brief

Switzerland did well in the qualifiers as well as their recent friendlies and approach the World Cup with optimism. Admir Mehmedi is out. Granit Xhaka is over a recent knock.

Looking Back

The Swiss qualified for the World Cup via the play-offs despite claiming 27 points out of a possible 30 in their qualifying group. They finished below Portugal on goal-difference with this record and beat Northern Ireland 1:0 in the play-offs to book their tickets to Russia.

They continued their fine form in their recent friendlies, which saw them draw against Spain and beat Japan. They have lost only one of the last 17 games they have played and will be in a fine mood.

Looking Ahead

Vladimir Petkovic has been in charge for four years now and will be hoping for the upcoming competition to be his best one yet in charge. The previous two big competitions saw the Swiss make it out of their groups, only to fall to an extra-time and a penalty shoot-out defeat in the first knock-out round.

The Swiss national team head coach will have to make his plans without Admir Mehmedi, who failed to make the World Cup squad due to an injury.

Arsenal man Granit Xhaka is over a recent injury, so everyone is expected to be available with the exception of Mehmedi.

Points of Interest

Switzerland's most recent competitive game against South American opposition was in the round of 16 of the previous World Cup, when they faced Argentina. They fell to a 1:0 extra-time defeat in the hands of the eventual finalists.
